Course/Module description:
The course aims to introduce students to key theories of drama, theatre and performance theories, from Aristotle's Poetics to Nietzsche and Wagner and through the feminist-epic theatre and to major 20th centuries notions such as theatricality, and theorists such as J.L. Austin, Judith Butler, Richard Schechner and others. We'll explore the intricate inter-relations between aesthetic praxis and critical theory.

Course/Module aims:
This course aims to introduce students to key theater and performance theories.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The students will become familiar with key notions of theatre, drama and performance theory, and will be able to juxtapose these theories with theatrical works of art.

Course/Module Content:
1. Aristotle: mimesis and the theory of tragic.
2. Nietzsche's "The Birth of Tragedy"; Genre theory in drama and theater.
3. Wagner's total theater.
4. Theatricality and performance theory.
5. Epic theatre
6. Feminist epic theatre
7. Reception: a theoretical perspective.
