Course/Module description:
encounter, framing translation as a practice that is also a metaphor for the dynamics of the colonial encounter— including the power, violence, and creativity inherent in it. Participants will engage with leading critical theories and notions (such as Orientalism, Mimicry, Hybridity, Transculturation, Contact Zone, and more) to examine how translation both shapes and reflects colonial realities, influencing cultural exchanges and power hierarchies.
Through a close analysis of literary texts and historical case studies, we will investigate the complexities and dynamics of translation of 'selves' and 'others'. The course will cover topics such as the act of interpreting cultural narratives from the global south, the politics of language, and the legacies of colonial translation practices in our contemporary post-colonial world

Course/Module aims:
Students will be able to scrutinize translations—both literary and those of the everyday—with a sensitivity to the politics of power that govern them. Students will develop tools to better understand complicated situations of encounters, and to assess the histories of reception of literary texts through colonial times and to our modern postcolonial age.

By the end of the seminar, students will develop critical tools to analyze the nuances of translation in the context of colonial and post-colonial framework. They will be encouraged to a deeper understanding of how these interactions continue to effect our every day life and shape global discourse today

5. Ambivalences of Orientalism, case study: "Kim" by Rudyard Kipling

6. Ambivalences of Orientalism, case study: A thousand and one nights.

7. Ambivalences of Orientalism, case study: Hindu philosophy and its translations back to modern India. Upanisads, Dara Shikoh, Swami Vivekananda.

8. Translation, violence, resistance: castes and colonial Inida. Arundhati Roy on Gandhi and Ambedkar.

9. Translation and Colonialism in substance: the story of the Koh-i-noor diamond.

10. Translation, Canon and Performance: Shakespeare in India.

11. on Dialogue and Anti-dialogue: postcolonial literature from the subcontinent. R. K Narayan, Salman Rushdie.

12. on Dialogue and Anti-dialogue: postcolonial literature from the subcontinent. Amitav Ghosh.
