Course/Module description:
The course will examine the reception of the works of the three crowns of Italian literature – Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio – in Hebrew literature from the Renaissance to the present. Focusing on the Divina Commedia and the Canzoniere, the course will analyze the ethical, aesthetic, and political uses made of these works in the Hebrew language across the centuries. Among other things, we will deal with the transformation that took place in the use of Dante between the literature of the revival generation, which saw the Italian national poet as an unfailing model for the renewed national-Zionist ideology, and the literature of the state generation, which used Dante as a basis for humanistic universalism on the one hand and as a harbinger of the trauma and destruction of European Jewry on the other. Among the authors we will discuss: Moses da Rieti, Micha Yosef Berdichevsky, Leah Goldberg, Shulamith Hareven, Aharon Megged, Anton Shammas, and Sharon Hass.

2. To become acquainted with theories of literary reception and to recognize the cultural and political importance of such reception.
