Course/Module description:
A study of the Midrash Leviticus Rabbah, an example of a particular method of redaction of the early midrashim. Selected passages will be read, utilizing the scientific edition of the work and its commentators. Subjects to be discussed include the manner of redaction of the work and the origin of its parts, its relation to other early midrashic works, and the poetics of the aggadic story in the Midrash.

Course/Module aims:
The aims of the course are an in-depth study of Midrash Leviticus Rabbah in the context of the classic aggadic corpus, the use of textual, philologic and literary tools in the analysis of the text, and an acquaintance with the specific genres of the classical aggadah and their development.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
* Read a midrashic unit with the help of the relevant philologic tools: the scientific ("critical") edition and the commentators to the text, and present a textual analysis ("the lower criticism");
* Identify the sources of the individual midrashic unit and its development from them, and compare between the unit in Leviticus Rabbah and its particular characteristics and parallel passages in the rabbinic corpus ("the higher criticism");
* Evaluate the methods of redaction of the midrashic unit in the context of the work as a whole, and identify the exegetical and homiletic messages embedded in the texts in their historical and cultural context;
* Explain disagreements of scholars concerning the relation of the Midrash and its method of redaction to methods of instruction and study in the early synagogue and beit midrash, and concerning the place of the Midrash within the development of the early midrashic corpus;
* Evaluate and appreciate the nature and style of the aggadic story and its particular narrative characteristics in the Midrash in the wider context of the historical development of the early aggadic story and its poetics.
