Course/Module description:
The study of rabbinic narrative is based, explicitly or implicitly, on the adoption and adaptation of central theories in literary studies. This seminar is an opportunity to delve deeper into reading theoretical literature firsthand, and to think creatively and critically about the ways these reading methodologies were and still are applied in the study of rabbinic literature. We will focus on three areas: New Criticism, post-structuralist theories, and feminist theory.
Course/Module aims:
Students will learn:
• To develop proficiency in reading and analyzing primary theoretical texts.
• To cultivate creative and critical thinking skills in adapting contemporary literary methodologies for the analysis of classical rabbinic literature.
• To critically examine the application of modern literary theories to the study of rabbinic narratives (aggadah).
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will be able to read critical theory in the fields the course focuses on. Use them to analyze rabbinic narratives and reflect on their application in previous scholarship.
