Course/Module description:
This course will focus on the linguistic and formal bases of lyric poetry. Over the course of the class, we will study works from the corpus of modern Hebrew poetry from Bialik until today; we will acquire tools for a close reading of these poems through exposure to these basic elements and with reference to their cultural and historical context; and we look at the theoretical aspects of interpretation.

Course/Module aims:
To become familiar with the linguistic and formal bases of lyric poetry; to discuss the status of poetic language in relation to other types of communication; and to acquire skills of interpretation and evaluation in the reading of poetry.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of this course, students will be able to understand and interpret a poem independently with close reading, paying attention to the entirety of linguistic, prosodic, and formal features, within an understanding of the relationship between these features and the design of the poetic speaker’s experience and the lyrical situation.

- Shared reading of poems
- Acquisition of interpretive skills
- Acquisition of concepts and terms for the linguistic and formal elements represented in the poems
- Practice of the prosodic basis of the poetry (poetic meters)
- Practice in interpretive writing that incorporates the tools acquired in class.
