Course/Module description:
Todros Abulafia lived in Christian Spain during the latter half of the thirteenth century. This course will address the complex relationship between his poetry and the literature of the past, as well as the place that his poetry holds in the social discourse and the literary space of his time.
The reader of Abulafia’s poems, like a participant in the Israeli children’s game, must guess the identity of the speaker: One child taps another on the back, disguises his voice, and calls, “Knock, knock! Who am I? What’s my name?” Children’s play serves as a metaphor for the poetic devices in Abulafia’s works. These devices reflect the poet’s atypical decision to obscure his voice as he contends with conflicts and dissonance arising from the demands and structures of the various reference groups in his life.
Course/Module aims:
Discuss the figure of the poet, who uses his poems to blur the boundary between reality and fiction. Identify the place of his works relative to the social discourse of his time and the literary space of Christian Spain: the maqama and related genres, the works of other poets of Christian Spain, and contemporary religious literature.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Read the poems of Todros Abulafia with attention to their main literary features and while drawing on a familiarity with the literary context and social context of his time.

Course/Module Content:
a. Historical and social background: Toledo in the thirteenth century, the royal court under Alfonso X, the artistic taste of the Jewish elite.
b. Permissiveness in literature and in life—on the delights of high society life: Luxury clothing, a bejeweled horse, gambling, and a beautiful woman.
c. Blame poetry and social satire.
d. The perception of fiction: The “poet in disguise,” poetic deception, the acrostic.
e. Artistic style: Quotations with altered meaning, coupling, names given new meaning, formal devices, and manneristic inclinations.
f. Abulafia’s entreaties to God.
g. Religious philosophical ideas given new meaning.
h. Sin and repentance—the causal notion of repentance.
