Course/Module description:
The course examines prayer as a ritual and the various elements of its ritual script including the words spoken, the accompanying body language of gestures, the place and time(s) performed. The focus will be on the principal Jewish prayer – the Amidah – with a special emphasis on its prescribed bodily gestures and their meaning.

Course/Module aims:
• To study prayer as a ritual and to understand what constitutes a ritual, how it works, and the secret of a successful ritual.
• To examine the body language alongside the spoken text of the principal Jewish prayer – the Amidah. To understand the messages communicated from the worshipper(s) to the divine addressee by these two media as well as the nature of the relationship between the parties and the religious experience encountered during the prayer's performance.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• To examine a ritual and describe all of its constituent verbal and non-verbal elements.
• To describe how each of the bodily gestures of the principal Jewish prayer – the Amidah – is performed.
• To explain the meaning of each of the bodily gestures in the Amidah prayer with reference to their use in inter-personal relations and their impact on the worshipper's relationship with God.
• To appraise the interplay between the various gestures and that between the body language and the spoken text of the Amidah prayer.
• To enumerate the changes made in the Reform prayer book to the Amidah prayer and to explain the reasons for them. To point out and explain modernizations in the Orthodox performance of obligatory public prayer.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: In each session the students will summarize the weekly required reading and, when applicable, demonstrate the bodily gesture studied. The teacher will facilitate class discussions on the suitability of each gesture to the text of the Amidah and the degree of harmony or dissonance between the various gestures. Mid-semester there will be a required study trip to the Israel Museum on the topic of synagogues as a place of prayer. During the final two classes the students will examine modern innovations in the Amidah from the perspective of ritual and will comprehensively assess the complete ritual system of the Amidah including all of its verbal and non-verbal elements and their meanings. At the beginning and end of the semester students will observe a ritual and report on it in class, analyzing its elements and rate of success or failure.
