Course/Module description:
In this seminar, we will explore the characteristics of Aggadah in the Talmud Yerushalmi and its place within the broader context of Rabbinic literature. The course will focus on close reading and analysis of selected Aggadic passages from the Yerushalmi, examining their editorial processes, connections to other rabbinic sources, and engaging critically with scholarly research on the subject. Special attention will be given to the textual and philological features of the Yerushalmi that are essential for understanding the text, as well as their influence on the Aggadic sections of the work.

Course/Module aims:
Refining analytical skills for interpreting Aggadic passages in the Yerushalmi; introducing the distinctive characteristics of the Yerushalmi and applying relevant scholarly tools for its study; gaining familiarity with the field’s scholarship and various contemporary methodological approaches to the subject.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The students will acquire skills in reading and analyzing Aggadic texts from the Yerushalmi, distinguishing between their layers, and identifying their use of earlier sources, as well as gaining a basic familiarity with its textual characteristics, editions, research tools, and more. In addition, students will become acquainted with scholarly discussions and methodological approaches concerning the study of Rabbinic Aggadah, the relationship between Halakhah and Aggadah, and the editing of the Talmud Yerushalmi.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course will include formal teaching alongside joint reading of rabbinic texts involving active participation by students. Preparation of texts and bibliographic reading will be required for lessons, including occasional presentation in class or submission of assignments or online tasks.
