Course/Module description:
Around the year 1000 in Muslim Spain, educated, open minded, religious began to dedicate their creative powers to write a Hebrew love poems. They wrote about the love of women and the love of young boys; about anguish, passion and beauty. They were influenced by the Arabic poetry they adored, but tried to emulate it through employing the language of Song of Songs.
What did they think of when they talked about love? Were they really in love? Through what filters did the Arabic love poetry go through on its way to receive Hebrew adaptaion? Are the love poems for women different from the love poems for boys? How does everything reconcile with the religious commitment of the poets?
