Course/Module description:
The course will follow the themes of wine and intoxication in the Hebrew poetry from the antiquity to nowadays. Special attention will be given to the Hebrew poetry from Muslim Spain, in which wine poetry was one of the major genres. We will examine the development of this poetic school, the influence it drew from the Arabic poetry, its unique motives and its social, philosophical and psychological structures. In addition, we shall read drinking poems by written by modern authors such as Natan Alterman, Alexander Pen, Natan Zach and others. We shall examine the similarities and differences between ancient and modern wine poems, and try to locate intertextual foci and direct or indirect influences. We shall discuss the relation of wine drinking to themes as joy de vivre, agony, friendship, masculinity, Eros and nature. We will ask how intoxication is represented through poetry, and deal with wine as a symbol.
