Course/Module description:
This course offers an introduction to poetry and prose in Egypt during the 17th and 18th centuries through al-Jabarti. The course will focus on reading and analyzing maqāmāt and poems which were written in Egypt during the 18th century. In addition, we will discuss the differences between neo-classical poetry and the poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries

Course/Module aims:
This course provides the student with an introduction to poetry and prose in Egypt during the 17th and 18th centuries via the History of al-Jabarti.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Acquire knowledge regarding the development and history of poetry in Egypt.
2. Acquire knowledge regarding the development and history of prose in Egypt.
3. Critically read and analyze secondary sources.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: During the course, we will read from the fundamental poetry sources, and discuss the relevant secondary literature

Introduction to poetry and prose in Egypt during the 17th and 18th centuries; the writings of al-Jabarti; the differences between the neo-classical poetry and the poetry of the 17th and 18th centuries
