Course/Module description:
In this course we will examine the cultural background that contributed to the growth of the adab literature, and explain the refusal of the classical theoreticians to consider this vast mass of compilations a legitimate genre. Additionally, we will discuss the cultural significance of the adab literature and the influence of Greek and Persian sources, via an analysis of the fundamental texts which formed part of this genre from its beginnings.
Course/Module aims:
This course sets as its goal providing the student with an introduction to the adab literature and to the characteristics that distinguish this genre from other literary genres.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
After completing this course, the students will be able to describe the development of the adab literature, and to analyze the canonical texts that belong to this genre according to their broader cultural and literary contexts.

Students may miss no more than two meetings during the semester
Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
This course will focus on reading texts from the various adab compilations. Students are required to vocalize and translate the texts in advance, using dictionaries and additional reference material which will be introduced in class

Introduction to the adab literature; the background to the emergence of the adab literature; the influence of Greek and Persian sources on the adab literature; reading representative texts of the adab literature, including:

العقد الفريد, ابن عبد ربه, مقدمة
كليلة ودمنة, ابن المقفع
كتاب البخلاء, الجاحظ, مقدمة, نوادر خراسان
الجاحظ, كتاب الحيوان
Required Reading:
Students will be provided with a variety of texts from the various adab sources, e.g., al-ʿIqd al-farīd of Ibn ʿAbd Rabbihi, Kitāb al-bukhalāʾ of al-Jāḥiẓ, etc.
