Course/Module description:
The aim of the class is to condense the wide variety of disciplines and fields of knowledge included in Arabic language and literature studies under the rubric of methodology. We will pose questions about the ways in which research approaches are renewed and paradigms are changed. How do scholars situate themselves in the field and break new paths? What methods are entailed in our field and how do we refine them? Can knowledge be produced by means other than philology? Does the separation between philology and cultural history still obtain? Does the digital age block philological sensibility or promote it? What roles do theoretical thinking, historical archives, personal experience, play in crystallizing a research idea and following through with it? What is the place of interdisciplinarity in studying Arabic language and literature and Islamic studies? We will hear a series of guest lecturers who will share with us not only the content of their research but also their working methods and thoughts about the relationship between theory and praxis in the current field.
