Course/Module description:
A close reading of Syriac and Islamic retellings of the Joseph narrative with comparison to the Bible and rabbinic traditions. We will focus on the links between the Quran and its exegesis and the Syriac literature. Students of the Arabic department with no prior knowledge of Syriac and Midrash are welcome as are students with a background in Syriac or Midrash but without knowledge of Arabic.

A close reading of primary sources in Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, and Arabic.

2. Reading select episodes of the Joseph narrative.
