Course/Module description:
We will read from the varied oeuvre of the wide-ranging intellectual Saadya Gaon (882-942) along with relevant secondary literature, in order to gain a picture of the world in which he lived and his influence on the Jewish world in his time and beyond.

We will read from the varied oeuvre of the wide-ranging intellectual Saadya Gaon (882-942) along with relevant secondary literature, in order to gain a picture of the world in which he lived and his influence on the Jewish world in his time and beyond.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To analyze a medieval text and to identify its genre
2. To disgintuish between the Jewish and the Arab-Islamic elements of texts read
3. To critique secondary sources
