Course/Module description:
This course examines the political, social, and economic experience of the Arab minority in Israel from the establishment of the State up until recent years. It addresses the relationship between the State and the Arab community and the distinctive internal dynamics of Arab society, including the religious groupings, changes in the family structure, gender issues, economic developments, the education system, the media, and social tensions and fractures.

Course/Module aims:
1) To give Israeli students a deeper knowledge of Arab society in Israel. Furthermore, the course provides a general and historical overview on Arab population in Jerusalem.
2) To develop students’ pedagogic ability in Arabic through reading texts and class discussion.
3) To equip the students with technical and cognitive skills to help them as Arabic teachers in Israeli schools.
4) To encourage them to think critically about issues that carry political connotations, such as the subject of the course.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1) Factual knowledge regarding Arab society in Israel.
2) Acquisition of pedagogic and didactic skills.
3) Development of critical thinking capacities.
4) Understanding of and ability to analyze primary and secondary sources.

The social mosaic: 4 meetings
1) Settlement distribution
2) The place of religion in Muslim society
3) The Druze and Bedouin
4) Christians—the secret of success

Social issues: 4 meetings
1) Economic developments
2) Arab family structure
3) Gender and the status of women
4) Crime in Arab society

Education and culture: 2 meetings
1) The education system in the Arab sector
2) Arab media—changes and trends

Final class: vision documents of the Arab minority in Israel.
