Course/Module description:
We will read selections from theological compositions composed by Muslims, Christians and Jews in the Islamicate sphere. Via the readings, we will encounter and discuss the way each religion portrayed the others – their tenets, their leaders, their history. Our readings will include the writings of al-Qirqisani (10th c Baghdad), ‘Abd al-Jabbar al-Hamadani (11th c Rayy), and Ibn Kammuna (13th c. Baghdad) as well as representative secondary sources that illuminate the period and the concepts discussed.

1. Gain familiarity with the historical cultural and religious background of a variety of examples of Arabic classical literature
2. Explain and generalize the primary elements of medieval Judeo-Arabic Bible exegesis
