Course/Module description:
We will read poems in classical Arabic, and discuss the main topics in this kind of literary genre. Each lesson, we will interpret the poems, examine their literary and social contexts, identify their metre, and elaborate on the artistic form of the poem.
The exam at the end of the semester will include a poem which was studied in class, and one which was not read during the lessons. The students are required to vocalize the text fully, identify the metre and explain the poem’s main themes
Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the various themes in classical Arabic poetry. The course will be dedicated to reading texts, since the students have already heard introductory lectures on classical Arabic poetry in course number 16304 (introduction to classical Arabic poetry), which focused on the basic terminology used in this field, and the poetic structures and characteristics of early Arabic poetry. During the lessons, emphasis will be placed on the correct understanding of the grammatical structures in the verses, as well as the ideas and feelings conveyed by the poet. The students will be referred to articles and encyclopedia entries which are relevant to the topics discussed in the lessons, and some of the articles will be presented by the students in class.
