Course/Module description:
This course consists of careful and close reading of Classical Arabic texts. Special attention will be given to the full vocalization of the texts, an understanding of the various names and terms in them, and their interpretation in the correct literary, cultural and historical contexts. The students will be required to prepare the texts in advance, using dictionaries and additional reference works which will be introduced in class. Additionally, the students will be required to be familiar with the relevant secondary literature, which will be discussed during the lessons.

Course/Module aims:
The course offers an introduction to various aspects of Arabic culture, religion and society during the pre-Islamic period and the first centuries of Islam, via the reading and analysis of texts (mainly prose) composed during the first centuries of Islam, and representing different genres, e.g. historiography, Sira, ḥadīth literature, etc.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Acquaintance with the various aspects of Arabic culture, religion and society during the pre-Islamic period and the first centuries of Islam.
2. Acquaintance with the relevant secondary literature and with additional reference material available online.
3. Improvement of the ability to read classical Arabic prose.
4. Development of critical-scientific thinking.

Attendance requirements(%):
Students may miss no more than two meetings during the semester.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: This course will focus on reading Classical Arabic texts. Special attention will be given to the full vocalization of the texts, an understanding of the various names and terms in them, and their interpretation in the correct literary and cultural contexts.

Course/Module Content:
The majority of the lessons will be dedicated to reading texts about the pre-Islamic (Jāhili) and the classical Islamic periods.

Texts and secondary literature will be distributed during the course itself.
