Course/Module description:
“Moral injury” is a term that has received much attention in recent years in psychological research. The term refers to mental harm caused by taking part in actions that violate one’s moral principles. The term was originally coined to diagnose soldiers who showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder without being in dangerous or life threatening situations. In this seminar we will study the phenomenon of moral injury and the psychological and philosophical literature on the subject. We will ask: what is the difference between moral injury and guilt or regret? What is the significance of construing a moral response as “injury” or “mental disorder”?
