Course/Module description:
What sort of thing are we? Animals? Souls? Computer programs? Something else entirely? We will address the question of what we are along with such related issues as our survival/persistence conditions and what matters (to us). We will focus on recent work in analytic metaphysics.

To gain a greater understanding of what we are and what matters to us

Articles and book excerpts by David Barnett, Tamar Gendler, John Hawthorne, William Lycan, Rory Madden, Eric Olson, Phillip Quinn, Lynne Rudder Baker, Marya Schechtman, Sydney Shoemaker, Peter Unger, Stephen Yablo, Dean Zimmerman, and others.

It is possible we will also read and discuss a draft of a debate book between the instructor and Eric Olson on the topic of whether we are wholly material.
