Course/Module description:
Human being are flawed creatures. We are never entirely rational, never entirely coherent; we do not always act as we think we should or do what we believe should be done; we sometimes give in to destructive impulses and we aspire to ideals we can never realize. In this course we'll ask whether standards of thought, conduct, and emotion -- in short, ethics -- should be adapted to human nature and if so in what way? Can requirements that not one can meet still be authoritative for us? Can an ethics adjusted to humans be more than a compromise? We'll read contemporary research in ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of emotion.
