Course/Module description:
What is the relation between language and reality? On the view we will discuss, language isn't just a description of reality, but also a way of acting in it. We will discuss theories of speech acts, implied meaning, and the relation between pragmatics and semantics.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Understand theories of speech acts
- Formulate research questions in philosophy of language
- Critically read texts on speech acts
- Distinguish between semantic and pragmatic issues
