Course/Module description:
What does it mean to be a ‘self’? Kierkegaard presents a detailed analysis of this concept in his influential The Sickness unto Death, and claims that a failure to be oneself is a state of despair. But how can one fail in being oneself? What is the nature of such a failure and what counts as a success in this regard? We will inquire into the connection between despair and (not) ‘being oneself’ by reading both in The Sickness unto Death and in the second part of Either-Or.
