Course/Module description:
During the years 1925-1929, Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig translated the Bible together into German. They worked on this project during a time when each was already recognized as one of the great Jewish thinkers of their age (Buber thanks to I and Thou, Rosenzweig thanks to The Star of Redemption). Since the two aimed to reconstruct the original message of the Bible, their translation work was accompanied by extensive correspondence between the two, and by notes and comments sent back and forth. These handwritten notes, drafts, and comments are held today in the Buber Collection at the National Library of Israel. This course will permit students to study Torah together with Buber and Rosenzweig, through the reconstruction of the dialogue that took place between the two as they tried to understand the Torah's message together.
