Course/Module description:
Reincarnation and Transmigration of Souls – East and West
The course will deal with believes and myths on reincarnation in the history of Jewish thought, from early medieval ages to the Renaissance. In the course we will discuss main trends and schools, the emergence of which has formed different versions to reincarnation, metempsychosis and transmigration of souls in Jewish literature. The major part of the course will be devoted to kabbalistic works, and will include comparative study. This seminar is part of the M.A. program in the study of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewry.

Course/Module aims:
This course aims to introduce its students to the main schools in medieval Kabbalah; to improve reading and analytical skills of medieval texts, particularly of primary sources which contain esoteric discourse and require hermeneutical methods; and to discuss various theoretical approaches to textual and historical studies of literary and spiritual trends.
