Course/Module description:
The course will analyze Jewish philosophical attitudes towards authority and law in Rabbinic literature.
Course/Module aims:
To become familiar with primary texts and concepts in Rabbinic literature that relate to the question of authority in Jewish law.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will become familiar with primary texts in Rabbinic literature that relate to authority and law; and will be able to reconstruct the theological, political philosophical and jurisprudential assumptions underlying these texts.

Course/Module Content:
The course will explore various conceptions of halakhic authority that are manifest in seminal
writings from Rabbinic literature. The
course will focus on different representations of the court system in rabbinic literature, and consider their biblical antecedents, philosophical assumptions, theological underpinnings, and ideological implications. The courts will also consider the role of Priests, the king, the Patriarch, and prophetic and charismatic figures in the dispensation of justice. Along the way, the course will explore the deep tensions within rabbinic writings on the administration of justice concerning the respective role of God and humans; the individual and institutions; its fixed or fluid nature; and its uniformity or plurality of systems.
