Course/Module description:
Over the course of the seminar, after several introductory lectures in which we will present the work of Judah Abravanel/ Leone Ebreo (15th to 16th century) and his cultural context, we will examine selected topics in the ‘Dialoghi d'amore’ (‘Dialogues of Love’).

Course/Module aims:
The main aim of the seminar is to provide students with a deeper knowledge of Judah Abravanel’s thought and his cultural context (and especially the Renaissance Platonism and Humanism).

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Be conversant in Abravanel's conceptions in the ‘Dialoghi d'amore’
- Discover the cultural and philosophical context in which Abravanel was active
- Gain a basic acquaintance with the interactions between Jewish thought and Renaissance
- Analyze texts by Jewish medieval thinkers

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Close readings of primary sources, discussion and student presentations

During the course we will discuss the following topics:
- Love in the 'Dialoghi d’amore'
- Beauty in the 'Dialoghi d’amore'
- The limits of human knowledge
- God and Universe
- Creation
- Abravanel’s sources
