Course/Module description:
Judaism has a rich tradition of artistic production as well as a long history of reflection on the role that objects and images should play in religious life. This course will center on Jewish engagement with the visual culture of the wider Mediterranean and Near Eastern society during the period of late antiquity (circa third to eighth centuries). We will pay particular attention to the recent archaeological discoveries that have been made at a number of sites in the region of the Galilee, which have transformed our understanding of the place of art in Judaism during this period. *Course/Module description


Course/Module aims:
Mastery of the history of Jewish image making in late antiquity

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Produce an original research paper on the history of Jewish art and material culture in late antiquity.

Attendance requirements(%):
All class sessions.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Seminar discussion, supplemented by occasional lectures.
