Course/Module description:
The course is an invitation to a journey into the depths of the unique Kabbalistic interpretation of the reasons for the commandments, to explore fascinating texts from the period of Castilian Kabbalah, and to encounter central Kabbalists such as Rabbi Joseph of Hamadan and Rabbi Moses de Leon, alongside the Zoharic literature. We will discover the unique genre of the reasons for the commandments, understand the complex relationship between Halakha (Jewish Law) and Kabbalah, analyze fascinating Kabbalistic interpretations of the commandments with an emphasis on the hidden theurgic and mythical dimensions within them. We will uncover the divine drama that unfolds in the observance of the commandments, the struggle between the forces of holiness and impurity, and consider the possibility of an anti-Christian element hidden in some of these mysteries.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims to provide a basic introduction to the unique interpretation that Kabbalah offers to the reasons for the commandments, focusing on Castilian Kabbalah. To develop the abilities of reading, analysis and interpretation of medieval Kabbalistic texts. To present the different theoretical approaches in the research of Kabbalistic texts that help uncover the hidden layers in these texts.

* Explain the central principles of the Kabbalistic interpretation of the reasons for the commandments from the period of Castilian Kabbalah.
* Analyze Kabbalistic texts dealing with the reasons for the commandments, identifying key symbols and motifs, and revealing the theurgic and mythical dimensions hidden in Kabbalistic interpretations.
* Get to know the central Kabbalists studied in the course.
* Draw conclusions using research literature.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, shared reading, and class discussion.

Course/Module Content:
The learning will include reading various Kabbalistic texts from the Castilian Kabbalists and Zoharic literature, while uncovering their sources and the hidden content within them. We will focus on various examples such as: the mystery of reciting the Shema, the reason for the prohibition of idolatry and planting an Asherah tree, the Kabbalistic meaning of the biblical commandment not to eat a kid in its mother's milk, the symbolism of wine and Kiddush over a cup of blessing, the mystery of washing hands, and more.
