Course/Module description:
This course will provide a serious introduction to modern Jewish biblical interpretation from the 17th through the 21st centuries. As such, the course is intended to serve students in the department of Jewish Thought, as well as from the Bible and Religious Studies departments. By the end of the course, students will have learned different interpretive practices, the works of different interpreters from Baruch Spinoza, Moses Mendelssohn, and Martin Buber through Nehama Leibowitz and Joseph Soloveitchik. We will examine the approaches of different commentators to the Bible as the source of truth, and will explore themes across the different commentaries like pshat and trash, biblical criticism, and the use of philosophical theories within biblical interpretation. We will focus on central ideas, methods, and sources use by modern Bible exegetes, and trace the development of Jewish interpretation across modernity.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
By the end of the course, students will be able to identify interpretative problems and their suggested solutions by modern Jewish commentators. Likewise, students will have the ability to discuss different accounts of the Bible as text over Shabbat dinner.
