In the course we shall read a selection of chapters from the The Guide of the Perplexed, the most influential book in medieval Jewish philosophy.
Course/Module aims:
The course aims at introducing the students to Maimonides’ exegetic method and to central philosophical concepts and terminology in the Guide of the Perplexed in the context of medieval philosophy.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
On successful completion of this course students will be acquainted with Maimonides’ exegetical method and with the fusion between tradition and philosophy in the Guide of the Perplexed against the background of medieval thought. Students further will be able to identify central concepts and terminology in the Guide of the Perplexed in particular and in medieval Jewish philosophy in general.
