Course/Module description:
The seminar will be devoted to a close reading in the eight gates of R. Hayyim Vital’s Ets Hayyim, the paradigmatic text of Lurianic Kabbalah in its Vitalic adaptation. The primary prism for our reading will be the relation between theory and practice in this composition, following the deep and utterly pragmatic interest Safedian kabbalists showed in the possibility to mend a broken world, both divine and corporeal. We shall thus ask about the centrality of action and agency to Lurianic Kabbalah: What are the conditions of possibility to act in the world, what is the relation between divine and human action and potency, how does one act, and what restricts this ability, as well as the effect of the way knowledge is shaped – the choice how to speak of the world – on the way action is conceived. Our reading will also situate this text and these questions in their broad historical and scholarly context, and ponder together upon the Lurianic-Vitalic project as a complete one, examining the relation between its different textual components, practical and theoretical.

To read and analyze intricate kabbalistic texts; to form and refine a research question regarding these materials, and contextualize it; to use relevant scholarship critically, and integrate it in their analysis; to use various scholarly methodologies in order to organize and examine their materials.
