Course/Module description:
The course Zohar Readings for Beginners will focus on Sefer ha-Zohar (&eq;The Book of Radiance), the magnum opus of Kabbalah, which began to appear in the Middle Ages and is considered to be the most influential work in Kabbalistic literature. The course will provide its participants with basic tools for elementary reading of The Zohar. In the course, we will read a selection of texts (in both Aramaic and Hebrew) from the extensive corpus of Sefer ha-Zohar, and specific attention will be given to its peculiar language, Theosophy, symbolism, mystical and midrashic world, and literary aspects. In the class, we will learn main pieces from the broad scholarly literature dedicated to The Zohar, and will discuss briefly The Zohar's history from its mysterious appearance to its first distribution in print.
Course/Module aims:
This course aims to introduce its students to Sefer ha-Zohar , its peculiar language, Theosophy, symbolism, mystical and midrashic world, etc. The course will provide its participants with basic tools for elementary reading of The Zohar; and will expose the students to different theories from the historical and textual scholarship dedicated to The Zohar.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate basic skills of reading a Zoharic text, and to understand its contents and theosophy, to analyze the text's literary aspects and to identify its symbols and myths.
The students will be able to demonstrate an introductory understanding of important issues and debates arising in the academic study of Zoharic literature, and an introductory knowledge and understanding of the main themes of Zoharic literature.
The students will be able to demonstrate skills in writing, critical thinking, argument, reflection, oral communication and ability to work independently and in groups
