Course/Module description:
Hundreds of ghettos were established in Eastern Europe; however, contrary to the image we have of them, it seems that the diversity among them outweighs their similarities. During the course, we will generally understand the phenomenon of the ghetto and the Nazi logic that guided their establishment, but we will mainly focus on the Jewish communities that existed within them. We will try to understand these communities through the perspectives of gender history and social and cultural history. We will examine the role of women in the ghettos, gender tensions, class disparities, survival and resistance efforts, as well as collaboration, betrayal, and daily life in a reality of extreme political violence.
Course/Module aims:
During the course, students will learn about the phenomenon of the ghetto during the Holocaust in all its complexity. Special emphasis will be placed on gender aspects of life in the ghetto.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
In the context of Nazi policy against the Jews, they will receive a more accurate historical depiction of the phenomenon. They will learn about the gendered and cultural social structures of life in the various ghettos. They will be introduced to primary sources and will be able to write a simple research paper on the lives of Jews in the ghettos.
