Course/Module description:
Contrary to the prevailing image we have of it, the Warsaw Ghetto was an urban space that included well-known municipal institutions such as cafés, hospitals, journalism, post offices, and more. However, it was a distorted urban space, subjected to violent attacks, somewhat disconnected from the rest of the city, flooded with refugees, under extreme repression, experiencing sharp social and economic tensions, and where the mortality rate became alarming. During the seminar, we will address various aspects of urban life in the Warsaw Ghetto and the ways in which they were experienced by its inhabitants. We will focus on the Ghetto and the experiences it contained, not as a prelude to Treblinka, which the Germans had not yet considered when they closed the Ghetto, but as a specific continuation of city life.

Course/Module aims:
To learn the Warsaw Ghetto in all its human and social complexity, which is very different from the popular image of the ghetto. To understand the Warsaw Ghetto as a part and continuation of urban life in Warsaw, even under very violent and oppressive conditions.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
At the end of the course:
A. Students will have broad and in-depth knowledge about the Warsaw Ghetto.
B. Students will have access to primary sources and will be able to conduct independent research on the ghetto.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Combination of short frontal teaching and mainly a joint discussion on primary sources and academic articles.
