Course/Module description:
The cultural history of the Jews in Sasanian Babylonia can be deciphered through the stories the Talmud tells: stories of biblical characters, rabbis, kings, and others. This course will ask what such stories can tell us about the society that produced them, its religious and cultural milieu, conflicts, influences, and relations with the surrounding non-Jewish cultures of Babylonia, and explore methodology for such study.

Course/Module aims:
The student will be introduced to the history of the Jews in Babylonia in the Sasanian Era. The student will be exposed to the latest developments in scholarship relating to the methodology employed when studying the relationship between Aggada and history, and the merits of the diverse approaches.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To independently analyze rabbinic aggadic sources for determining their potential to inform us about social or cultural history.
To use effectively the research tools needed for studying rabbinic literature.
