Course/Module description:
This course will concentrate on life cycle and annual cycle rituals as celebrated by medieval Jews in Ashkenaz. We will examine the use of a variety of anthropological methods and discuss how these methods can be used to help further historical research. The central rituals studied will be based on medieval Jewish sources but these will be compared to Jewish rituals from other times and places and to contemporary Christian rituals. The course will seek to introduce students interested in all historical periods to new methods and their implications.

Course/Module aims:
Assessment and application of theories from other disciplines, especially anthropology alongside advanced work with medieval sources, comparative history, creation of independent research that applies the material learned in class and demonstrates independent thinking

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
