Course/Module description:
The course will take a close look look at Libya’s Jewish community, by reading Higgid Mordecaï: The history, institutions and customs of the Jews of Libya, by Mordecai Ha Cohen, an intellectual of the community (1856-1929). The book was first printed in 1981, at the initiative of anthropologist Harvey Goldberg. The discussion will run along four main axes, set to interweave with every lesson : 1. Discussion into the history of Libya’s Jewish community through a close reading of Higgid Mordecaï; 2. Reading studies written about Libya’s Jewish community, followed by discussions; 3. Analysis of a Jewish community in Muslim countries in the 19th and 20th centuries in light of the Higgid Mordecaï case study; 4. Methodological discussion on Higgid Mordecaï, exploring the work of the historian.

By the end of the course, students will master the acquired body of knowledge and be trained in a critical reading of studies, while reading and analyzing various primary sources, and writing an academic historical essay.

Each lesson is set to involve a discussion into an article and a close reading of a primary source, with students required to prepare an article for discussion in class.

An overview of Higgid Mordecaï; outlining Libya and its Jewry; intellectual sources and connections in Higgid Mordecaï; the long history of Libya and its Jews; the Libyan Jewry’s tongue; the structure of Libya’s Jewish community; Libya Jewry’s customs; Jewish-Muslim relations in Libya; Jewish villagers in Libya; social and cultural changes among Libya’s Jewry.
