Course/Module description:
The course will take us on a journey in the footsteps Jewish men and women of letters in Muslim Countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. These intellectuals wrote in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Ladino, Literary Arabic and European languages like French, Spanish, Italian or English. Along the journey, we shall look into the wider historical contexts (political, social and cultural) that precipitated the emergence of this new class of writers. We shall open up the discussion into the different writers’ biographies, exploring the networks of cultural and intellectual relations they sustained with colleagues locally and globally. Reading their compositions, the worlds engaging these writers shall unfold, along with the ideologies they sought to propagate, and the identity they strived to forge among their readers.

By the end of the course, students will master the acquired body of knowledge and be trained in a critical reading of studies, while reading and analyzing various primary sources, and writing an academic historical essay.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Each lesson is set to involve a discussion into an article and a close reading of a primary source, with students required to prepare an article for discussion in class.

Jewish communities in Muslim countries during the 19th and 20th centuries – space, tongue and culture; the multiplicity of modernity patterns and education tracks in Muslim countries: Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) , Judeo-Arabic Enlightenment, The Nahda (Arab Enlightenment), Western Enlightenment; Hebrew-writing intellectuals; Judeo-Arabic intellectuals; European-language writing intellectuals: French, Spanish, Italian or English; Literary Arabic-writing intellectuals; polyglot intellectuals.
