Course/Module description:
We'll discuss the basic theories of nationalism, as well as the central historiographical trends of the scholarship on Jewish nationalism and Zionism. A particular emphasis will be placed on the elaboration of meeting points between theories of nationalism and historiography of nationalism.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Assess the extent of contribution of the theories of nationalism to our understanding of the Jewish nationalism phenomenon; critically analyze the corpus of historiography scholarship on the rise of the modern Jewish nationalism and Zionism; conduct comparative studies of the rise of modern Zionism and the case studies of the non-Jewish national movements in the geopolitical space of Zionism's development

Nations and nationalism: definitions and concepts; nationalism as "daily plebiscite"; Hans Kohn's dichotomy; primordialist approach; modernist approach; ethno-symbolic approach; nationalism and the nation-state; Miroslav Hroch on non-dominant nationalities; modern nationalism and its recent past; Jerusalem school; ethno-symbolism and Zionism; Shlomo Sand and his critics; Israel Bartal and the Recent Past of modern Zionism; Pinsker, Herzl, and the rise of political Zionism
