Course/Module description:
The crisis of 1391 is a starting point to an investigation of the social and spiritual challenges that Spanish Jewry’s leaders faced in the 15th century. We will concentrate on the establishment of the society of Conversos (Anusim), on the phenomenon of martyrdom and on the devlopement of new grammar of conversion.

Course/Module aims:
1. To understand the scholarly discourse and the historiographical debate on the phenomenon of martyrium (Kidush ha-Shem) in Spain and Ashkenaz.
2. Historical analysis of the emergence of Conversos' society.
3. Learning the Jewish-Conversos discourse,
4. Learning the new language of conversion.
5. Reading Hebrew medieval manuscripts from Spain.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To be able to analyze primary sources of Jewish-Conversos discourse in Spain.
2. To write a short thesis on one of the seminar's subjects.
3.To know major chapters of the history of the Jews in Spain in the first half of the fifteenth century.
4. Reading Hebrew medieval manuscripts.
