Course/Module description:
The shadarim – the emissaries sent in order to collect money for the four holy cities – became one of the typical institutions of early modern Jewry. Taking off from Avraham Ya’ari’s work, lately revisited and upgraded by Matthias Lehmann, we shall walk in their footsteps, mostly around the Mediterranean. We shall read some of the letters they carried, and learn about relations, communications and transfer of knowledge between Jewish communities and the often problematic encounter between Jews from Palestine and their brethren from other communities.
