Course/Module description:
The responsa literature is one of the most fascinatingly rich sources for studying Jewish history. One of its advantages is its accessibility. Hundreds of volumes authored by Ottoman-Jewish rabbis in Hebrew in rashi/sephardi script include information regarding communal life, officeholders and institutions, taxes, social tensions, various economic matters, family life, and culture. These ‘Jewish Questions’ often bring voices from below, and allow up to reconstruct history from the bottom up.
