Course/Module description:
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Muslim lands experienced political, social and cultural shifts that affected in turn the lives of Jews. These shifts reflected in the multiple education institutions established across communities with the aim of imparting children and youth with sets of behaviors, skills and different preferences. The discussion into the history of these institutions, with their ideology and curricula, sheds light on the adequate man they sought to shape. The variety of education institutions across the Jewish communities represent the different patterns of modernity facing Jews of Muslim lands.

Course/Module aims:
Presenting the students with the options of modernizations facing Jewish communities across Muslim lands, through their education institutions, while reading studies and primary sources and holding a group discussion.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
By the end of the course, students will have learnt to present and explain the various modernization options across Jewish communities in Muslim lands, with a comparative gaze cast on the various communities; critical reading of studies; reading and analysis of diverse primary sources; formulating research questions.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Each class is set to involve a talk, discussion into an essay and a close reading of a primary sources, with students presenting the education of a given Jewish community in Muslim lands.

Traditional education: Cheder and Yeshiva, missionary education, colonial education, Jewish philanthropy, Alliance Israélite Universelle, Arabic education, orthodox education, Hebrew-Zionist education.
