Course/Module description:
Reviewing the changes that passed on the Yemenite Jews from the middle ages to modern time as a result of geo- political developments in the area as a result of the political vicissitudes that took place in Yemen itself. In addition, the course will discuss in detail the relations of Yemenite Jewry with other Jewish communities during the middle ages and until the mass immigration to the Land of Israel in the 1880’ and the 'On Eagles Wings' immediately after the establishment of the State of Israel.

Course/Module Content:
1. (a) Introduction: the geopolitical importance of Yemen in international trade in antiquity and during the middle ages; (b) Yemenite Jewry – from State religion in the Kingdom of Himyar to a religious minority under Islam rule.
2. Yemeni Jews and Jewish centes in the Arab-Islamic world during the 10th-12th c.
3. Yemenite Jewry and Maimonides.
4. Yemeni Jewish isolation during Rasuli and Tahiri dynasties (mid. 13th-mid. 16th c.).
5. The worsening of the political and social situation of the Jews of Yemen during the Qasimi dynasty (1629 – 1872): the edict of the headgears and the expulsion to Mawza’, religious conversion and orphans’ conversion.
6. Messianism as a social-religious phenomenon among the Jews of Yemen.
7. Travelers, traders, and Jewish missinaries as a liaison between Yemenite Jews and Jewish communities.
8. The return to the Yemeni tribe to the consciousness of the Jewish nation during the 13th c.
