Course/Module description:
The course explores developments in North African countries during the Holocaust and WW2, while discussing the anti-Jewish legislation and its implications for the economy, education, Jewish community organizing and everyday life. The course dwells on each Jewish community, in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya respectively, with a pertinent comparative discussion. Alongside the local Jews, it looks into European refugees who found a safe haven in Morocco, while delving into the aid extended to them by the local community. Beside history, the course discusses WW2 and Holocaust memory in North Africa immediately after the war, alongside the memory of this period in the State of Israel, from its foundation to date, while touching upon cultural agents in education, museums, theater, cinema, and literature.

Addressing the WW2 and Holocaust history in North Africa and the memory of this period in the State of Israel, while reading studies and primary sources and holding a group discussion.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
By the end of the course, students will have learnt to set out and explain the case of WW2 and the Holocaust across North Africa’s Jewish communities, while comparing them and explaining the memory of WW2 and Holocaust in North Africa in Israel, from its foundation to date; critical reading of studies; reading and analysis of diverse primary sources; formulating research questions.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Each class is set to involve a talk, discussion into an essay and a close reading of a primary source, with students required to prepare an essay for discussion in class.

North Africa’s Jewry in the early 20th century, the French occupation and its effects on North Africa, Tunisia’s Jewry during the war, Algeria’s Jewry during the war , Morocco’s Jewry during the war, Libya’s Jewry during the war, Jewish refugees from Europe in Morocco, labor camps in Morocco, historical Holocaust-themed literature in Tunisia and Morocco towards the end of the war, Mizrahim and the Holocaust in the State of Israel, “No Comparisons – Mizrahi Jews and the Holocaust”: Holocaust-related Mizrahi awareness 25 years ago, Holocaust period in North Africa, as reflected in Israeli documentary films and theater.
