Course/Module description:
This course will expose students to key aspects of the development of Jewish civilization in modern times. This will be done through systematic reading and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative materials. The course is adjusted for students of the dept. of Jewish history and contemporary Jewry. It reflects the strong mutual relationships between different disciplines including those which cross wide fields of the humanities and the social sciences.

Course/Module aims:
Provide students with knowledge and research tools for the social scientific study of Jewry in areas such as sociology,economics, politics, and geography.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Learn, read and analyze primary sources on different complementary aspects of the socio-cultural life of Jews from the late 19th century through today.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, joint analysis, and discussions on the topics below.

Course/Module Content:
Window to the social sciences, sources and methods in the social sciences, data archives, Demography, migration, family, socio-economic stratification, Jewish identity, ethnicity, Israel-Diaspora relations, antisemitism.

Additional information:
Students will be required to submit 3 assignments each of which accounts for 10% of the final grade of the course. Conditioned on the pandemic, some of the classes will be held at the computer center on Mt. Scopus.
