Course/Module description:
The Hasmonean state is the fulfillment of hopes for the return to Zion, but it arose more than three hundred and fifty years after the return to Zion. The course will deal with the independent Jewish state that existed in the second and the first centuries BCE, the revolt that led to its establishment, the causes of the revolt, the processes that led to the establishment of the state, its expansion and finally its fall and Roman conquest
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To describe the course of events from the Hasmonean rebellion to the Roman conquest of Judea
To explain the complexity of Jewish society and its challenges, the international situation and the causes of events in the period
To analyze a primary source that deals with the Hasmonean state
To analyze and criticize historical research on the period
To write a small independent study on the history of the Hasmoneans
